The London Neuropsychoanalysis Group was founded in 2009 with a special emphasis on psychodynamic neuroscience and neuropsychology. Now in our fourth year, we have a membership of about 140 professionals and students who come from several regions of the U.K., some of whom make it down to London on a regular basis.
Our scope: The main academic aim of the group is to promote a valid, reliable, and fruitful exchange of knowledge and perspectives between neuroscience and psychoanalysis. The main practical aim is to bring together scholars, researchers, and clinicians from these fields, and from other related fields, and create the necessary conditions for constructive, mutually respectful dialogue. The group has a special interest and expertise in neuropsychology and clinical work with neurological patients but it is open to other approaches. Since 2010, following a number of presentations on clinical work with neuropsychological patients, as well as some presentations on basic neuroscientific research, we decided to make a distinction between these two types of presentations; we heuristically call the former “Presentations in Neuropsychoanalysis” and the latter “Presentations in Psychodynamic Neuroscience.” Our group welcomes both approaches, and we try to alternate them every month, or at least include a healthy variety of the two. The group also functions as a base for exchanging professional news, enhancing interdisciplinary careers, and forming clinical and research collaborations.
Our format: The group meets monthly, on the evening of the first Thursday of every month during the academic year, at the prestigious Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience (ICN) at University College London. One of its members or an invited speaker presents a piece of work, which is then extensively discussed by the group. Dr. Aikaterini Fotopoulou moderates the discussion, which continues over wine in a bar nearby and gets more interesting as the evening progresses, and the alcohol levels r
