The 16th Annual Congress of the International Neuropsychoanalysis Society, Amsterdam, July 9-11, 2015: “Plasticity and Repetition (and Other Topics)”
At our 16th annual congress, the development of neuropsychoanalytic research came into view more clearly than ever. Colleagues from around the world presented on a diverse range of topics in research sessions and symposia, using a range of methods. Sensitive clinical work with patients with brain injury was presented in parallel with neurophysiology findings on sleep and dreams. Neuroscience experiments that addressed psychoanalytic constructs like repression and object relations were presented alongside animal work on memory processes and development.
As an audience member who has been present at all of our research days since our first one in Stockholm in 2002 (which featured just eight pioneering researchers), it was deeply satisfying to see this explosion of serious and nuanced work emerging from all corners of the globe. Even more exciting was the number of young, bright researchers throwing their hats in the ring. It was wonderful to see so many people entering this neuropsychoanalytic dialogue from the beginning of their training, with such enthusiasm and thoughtfulness. Indeed, the very matter-of-factness with which they are integrating the two domains indicates that our interdisciplinary endeavor has truly taken off.
To get a full sense of the ground covered at this congress, read the abstracts in this section. Then keep your eyes out for the published papers that are bound to follow, both in these pages and in other scientific journals. We thank our dedicated congress co-hosts at RINO-Noord Holland for their incredible support in running the conference in Amsterdam. We also encourage you to submit proposals for our next congress in Chicago, in July 2016; stay tuned for details!
