We are delighted to feature reports in this bulletin from all over the world, as usual. In this issue, we have news from Brussels, Mexico City, Lisbon, and Istanbul. Please see below for the fascinating research, interdisciplinary meetings, and thought-provoking publications that our colleagues are reporting on.
Speaking of Mexico City – we hope to see you at our 19th Annual Congress of the International Neuropsychoanlaysis Society, being held there August 31-September 2. Together we will dive in to the complex topic of “Repression and Defense.” Visit npsa-association.org for details.

The great scientist, thinker, and clinician, Howard Shevrin, died at the age of 91 on January 18th, 2018 in Ann Arbor. He brought major contributions to the instantiation of metapsychology in the context of the actual neurosciences, showing for example that subliminal mental processing is not simply a low level automatic process. Indeed, it involves global brain activation and is already a function of personality traits. Importantly, he proposes that the synchronization of the alpha wave, known for its cognitive inhibitory function, could also be the brain process involved in primary defense. This research we have recently summarized in the following publication:
Bazan, A. (2017). Alpha synchronization as a brain model for unconscious defense: An overview of the work of Howard Shevrin and his team. The International Journal of Psychoanalysis.
