This short commentary on Solms highlights three points in his paper. The first is Freud’s intuition of the lifecycle of eels, showing that his prodigious mind was blooming, even when he was assigned a perfunctory task as a young biology researcher. The second is the concept that the body periphery is no longer contained topologically in the higher parts of the brain, but only functionally. Our commentary shows that functional outcomes of movements, instead of topological maps of body muscles, are automatically recruited by the basal ganglia motor circuits. The third is a short discussion of priors, parallel processing and emotional brain, by comparing Solms’ conceptions with ideas and terms used by authors working in the neuroscience or neuroethics fields.
