It is a great pleasure to comment on Mark Solms’s “symphonic” target article (to borrow a term from Maggie Zellner). Solms composes a functional model of functional neurological symptoms (FNSs) by updating and integrating psychoanalysis with contemporary neuroscience. Accompanied by Lacan and Freud, here I cross our dual-aspect monist bridge in the reverse direction to sketch a differential diagnostic reading of FNSs within Solms’s meta-neuropsychology. I hope the insights in Solms’s target article join our growing clinical discussions around diagnosis and technique.
