In this commentary I review this important and timely contribution. Noted is its consideration of many perspectives and disciplines as they formulate and articulate a “Two Path” developmental model that contrasts the consequences of living and growing in an environment that offers safety, security, and predictability, vs one that is fraught with danger, insecurity and unpredictability. They importantly note the influences of the hormonal contributions of oxytocin and vasopressin, and their respective ratios, as they appear in the contrasting development of persons on the differing paths. Also admired is the authors’ recognition and acknowledgment of the now more broadly recognized influence of loneliness. They note its contribution to both mental and physical health and well-being. Their theory building concludes with review of the pathway to the attainment of the developmental accomplishment of mastering an integrated and available sense of object constancy, an essential process in achieving the reliably available ability to “metabolize love,” that is to receive, use, and return love, rather than refusing it. This commentary concludes with the mention of noteworthy programs and resources in the literature that support programs of primary prevention, early intervention, and/or psychotherapy/psychoanalysis.
