Singletary and Rice provide a comprehensive review of open and closed-system functioning as shaped by early childhood experiences. The paper integrates knowledge from neurobiology and psychoanalysis to formulate hypotheses to explain the multifactorial nature of the consequences of childhood adversity. This commentary builds upon their contributions by incorporating an affective neuroscience perspective, particularly in relation to understanding closed-system functioning and its association with potential depressive symptoms. Additionally, certain treatment considerations are addressed.
