In this paper, we examine the complex psychological paths that an anorexic female adolescent is called upon to follow in order to establish a stable sense of identity. The psychoanalytic theory discussed is informed by clinical case material as well as empirical findings derived from projective and performance-based psychological assessments (The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III), Rorschach Inkblot Test, the Thematic Apperception Test and the Düss Test/Fables). The ultimate goal is the articulation of a multidimensional approach to the pathology of anorexia, with an emphasis on the rich latent content underpinning this adolescent's own discourse and thought.
