During the 1997 winter meetings of the American Psychoanalytic Association in New York, the Council of Editors of Psychoanalytic Journals held its first meeting, on December 20. The Council was conceived and organized by Joseph Reppen PhD, the Editor of Psychoanalytic Books and Psychoanalytic Psychology. His proposal to form a Council has been enthusiastically supported. Thus far 35 editors have joined the Council, and 24 editors or their representatives attended the gathering in New York.
Some practical steps were quickly agreed upon. Since many editors attend the winter meetings of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the council will convene each year during these meetings. Joseph Reppen was elected Chair of the Council. A Directory of member journals will be created and distributed, and a newsletter is planned for the summer of 1998. Invitations to join the Council will also be extended to some 40 editors of foreign journals who were not present in New York.
