Karin Stephen gave this paper to the British Psycho-Analytical Society on 2 May 1945. The now published version is identical with a carbon copy in my possession which has a few minor alterations in her handwriting, now incorporated, clearly made for publication which did not come about, probably because of the deteriorating health of her husband, Adrian Stephen.
