Dear Sir
In my article, ‘Dreaming about Irma’, in Psychoanalysis and History 4(2), I wrote that ‘Schröter in the German edition [of Freud's letters to Fliess] adopts Swales's suggestion, though without acknowledgement’ (p. 175, n. 7). This was apropos an added footnote that encapsulates Peter Swales's previously published proposal that the underlining of the reference to a theory of sexual substance in Freud's Draft D might in fact have been made by the document's recipient, Wilhelm Fliess.
Dr Michael Schröter, the editor of the German edition of the Freud/Fliess letters, has written to me to point out that in fact not he, but Gerhard Fichtner was responsible for the footnote to which I was referring, which is part of the textual-critical and not the editorial apparatus. He also points out that this could be discerned from the explanatory note on p. xxx of his edition.
This was indeed a clear error on my part, which I am happy to be able to correct publicly. I am grateful to Dr Schröter for taking the trouble to alert me to this mistake and I apologise to him for my careless misattribution.
Yours faithfully
