In male patients who cling unconsciously to the belief that women possess a phallus, this fantasy is always of deuterophallic nature, i.e., it serves to assuage the castration fear which dominates the entire structure of the personality. It is interesting that these same patients often fantasy or dream of men with female genitalia, or of men who transform themselves into women. Their purpose is to escape from anxiety through 'motherly protection on the part of the father'. These patients are usually passive types for whom activity is always connected with anxiety, characters who as children had attached themselves particularly to the female members of their families.
