The antecedent of surrealism was futurism, which started in Italy about 1910 as a rebellion 'against the tyranny of the words "Harmony" and "Good Taste"'. A special variation is Dadaism, whose object was 'to spit in the eyes of the world'. Surrealism got new energy after the first world war and used psychoanalysis to reënforce with authority the assault upon all forms of restraint. Surrealism is Dadaism grown to cunning maturity. It is one symptom of the great contemporary rebellion from which Naziism grew as another.
