It is assumed that there exists a typical German character structure which is defined in terms of dominance, submission, and romantic revolt. Such a character structure, although probably an independent factor, is supported by the institutional structure of German society. The dominant character structure of modern Germans had been distinguished by a striking dualism between an emotional, idealistic, active, romantic component, and an orderly, hard-working, preoccupied, methodical, submissive, gregarious, materialistic component. The rehabilitation of the German people must be brought about by institutional and characteriological changes.
