Abstract

This psychoanalytic psychopathology of authors is an elaboration of previous studies by Bergler. Many common characteristics of writers are traced to unsolved,

unconscious, oral conflict. Positive and negative scoptophilic manifestations, latent homosexuality and alcoholic addiction are understood in these terms. Certain typical misconceptions concerning writers are discussed and it is concluded that psychoanalysis does not need to destroy but may, on the contrary, cure a 'writing block'. The paper abounds in illustrative clinical material.
