Grete Bibring notes the tendency of caseworkers and others, after contact with analytic techniques, to identify psychotherapy with insight therapy and to see in interpretation the fundamental or even exclusive tool for dealing with personality problem. She contrasts this with another approach in which psychoanalytic insight is used to understand the client's conflicts and personality structure, in order thus to manipulate him and his situation more skilfully, that is, by redirection and clarification. How this is accomplished is illustrated by excellent case material.
