A case similar to that described by Freud in A Religious Experience1 is reported. While witnessing an operation on a middle-aged woman, a twenty-six-year-old medical student suddenly felt it impossible to believe in God. Several weeks later, during religious services following the death of his father-in-law, the young man's doubts vanished. These events were interpreted as follows: 1, mobilization of Oedipal conflict while witnessing the operation in which he identified himself with his sadistic father assaulting his mother in a primal scene fantasy; 2, reaction against this aggressive wish by turning in revolt (doubt) against father (God); 3, subsequent need to pacify his father when warned by the death of his father-in-law. Thus the student submitted once more to God the Father.
