A schizophrenic woman of thirty-five, who had spent most of her time in mental hospitals for the past twelve years and had not been helped by shock therapies, was treated with direct analytic therapy as described by John N. Rosen and improved remarkably. Transference and particularly the countertransference of the therapist played the decisive part. While questioning was ineffective, direct interpretations in a rather intuitive manner led to a dramatic release of affect and rapid improvement.
