In this paper Schmidl attempts to explain some of the background of the misunderstandings between psychoanalysts and sociologists. The author believes this is in part due to the fact that in his sociological writings Freud did not use contemporary leaders in the world of sociology as his frame of reference. Schmidl is of the opinion that Freud wrote Totem and Taboo as a rebuttal to Jung's controversial theories. He also believes that Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego served Freud predominantly as an opportunity to broaden the concepts of suggestion and identification. Despite the fact that Freud's treatment of sociological problems may have been methodologically incorrect, Schmidl stresses the fact that psychoanalytic concepts have proven and will continue to prove of great value in sociological studies.
