A study of skeletal muscles in sixty-five subjects with backaches reveals that muscle hyperfunction, as characterized by generalized and sustained increase in motor and electrical activity, was the common accompaniment of the reaction of subjects with backaches. The backache syndrome is viewed as the expression of reaction to a variety of emotions. A postulate is developed as to how the muscle hyperactivity produces pain.
