This paper demonstrates how and why the process of spelling was singled out in the symptom formation of a severely neurotic patient. Very early in life spelling became a means of pleasing his mother and simultaneously of excelling his father. After the mother's death the patient had to inhibit his aggressive instincts toward his father and thus had to renounce his ability to spell. After many attempts at educational therapy had failed, analytic therapy was able to remove this symptom.
