Pearlman describes a patient who used many bodily symptoms as a means of channelizing his hostility, dependency, and guilt feelings. This resulted in a curious lack of anxiety about his sicknesses as well as in a stubborn clinging to them. From the dynamics of the case, however, it is not convincing that this patient suffered from hypochondriasis. Hypochondriasis is more than an anxiety-free preoccupation with the body and belongs to the category of borderline psychotic disorders.
