It is impossible to review this paper without giving it verbatim. It is a historical paper and of extreme interest and great richness. The bibliography contains a list of sixty-four books. From these references Stainbrook has put together a short but convincing account of the interest of the nineteenth century physician in somatopsychic and psychosomatic theory. It is always a refreshing shock to be reminded of the sophistication of our antecedents. It is well worth the time to read this paper in its entirety.
