A twenty-five-year-old schizophrenic woman, in treatment in a hospital, experienced repeated spontaneous orgasms without detectable external stimulus and with bland, impoverished affect. These were not the same as the orgasms of 'hyperesthesia sexualis' described by Krafft-Ebbing and others—patients in whom some slight touch or other contact with a love object was sufficient to produce the response. The nonpsychotic retains his object relationships and his orgasm is linked with these objects, but the psychotic may experience it, as in this patient, without any object tie and without anything resembling masturbatory activity.
