The 'discriminating function of the ego' is described and its probable psychological mechanism discussed. Breakdown of the function leads to errors in evaluation of reality characterized by wish fulfilments, condensations, displacements, and other mechanisms suggestive of the primary process. Both the preconscious and the unconscious seem to be involved in this function. A partial theory of how the function operates in terms of neurophysiology is presented.
