Secondary amenorrhea is the pathological absence of menstruation in a woman who previously had normal menstrual cycles. Twenty-six patients with secondary amenorrhea were studied by psychiatric interview. In these patients were found 'extreme degrees of psychosexual immaturity, oral conflict, and schizoid thinking'. The authors conclude that in some instances the amenorrhea constitutes a 'symptom of neurohumoral disorder of function'. Psychiatric therapy is often indicated in these cases. The danger of psychotic breakdown during therapy must be kept in mind.
