The author discusses the usefulness of judicious questioning in therapy, particularly of the inarticulate 'borderline' neurotic, the patient in an anxiety state, the obsessive patient, and the psychotic. Questioning may be necessary in the interpretation of resistance. 'Systematic inquiry and interpretation both release potential energy for the reconfiguration of experience and action; both furnish the ego with an added increment of autonomy over instinct components.'
