Investigation of such validation requires two questions: what frame of reference is used in the interpretation, and is that frame legitimate? For example, an interpretation concerning infantile sexuality presupposes the existence of infantile sexuality. Further, there needs to be an identity or resemblance of relation between the element being interpreted and the interpretation given. An interpretation may be considered valid if it explains all the known facts of the situation and if it is confirmed by facts discovered after interpretation. The Gestalt quality of the interpreted material is of crucial importance: it is essential to note not only the sum total of the elements involved, but also the way in which they are connected to each other. Both what is interpreted and the interpretation itself have specific Gestalts: when these two Gestalts fit closely, one accepts their belonging together.
