Abstract

Music has two phases, one representing the sounds inside the body, and the other representing sounds coming from the outside world.

The authors conclude that music has its origin in the human body. It is a recreation of the mother's voice, it is a defense against deep anxieties connected with silence, and it is the most regressive form of sublimation. Its origin is intimately related to the origin of speech.
