The level of 17-hydroxycorticosteroids in the peripheral blood and in the urine is used in these studies as an index of the reaction of the adrenal cortex to emotional stress occurring in ordinary life and in experimental conditions. Emotional excitation caused consistent but modest increases of the steroids in the blood and urine, but these increases did not show the same magnitude as after administration of adrenocorticotropic hormone, Piromen, insulin, electroshock treatment, or moderate exercise.
