Smugness universally arouses dislike because the smug person is unconsciously seen as the well-fed nursling falling asleep at the mother's breast, a position everyone envies. Smugness means this because it implies complacence, self-centeredness, and self-satisfaction, as well as oral satiety, indifference to the environment, absence of guilt, and inability to learn. Persons deprived in childhood and lacking narcissistic supplies later are especially resentful of the smug.
