The author illustrates with clinical material a scheme of 'levels'. Early frustrations constitute the deepest level, a primary depressive situation. The next stratum, a libidinal bond to a frustrating object imago, is the first paranoid situation, which elicits identification with the persecutor (primary manic situation). This leads to the destruction of the object; the secondary depressive situation
is reached. Racker defines eight such strata. The succession depressive, paranoid, and manic appears twice.
