Gardner Murphy is one of a bare half dozen of the truly great psychologists of the past quarter century or more. The twenty-six papers of the present volume have as their only leitmotiv dedication to his sixty-fifth birthday by colleagues and students at the many institutions he has enriched; currently he is Director of Research at the Menninger Foundation. Tribute is well deserved by Murphy: his important contributions to psychological science are many. The greatest brilliance of mind is accompanied by a humanistic breadth of knowledge and matched by an intellectual courage and personal integrity that is only very rarely encountered.
The vast majority of the articles are of only tangential interest to analysts although one dealing with cognitive style and another with subliminal stimuli are relevant, but both are also familiar from other publications. However, should an analyst want to sample some of the current activities and thoughts of psychologists, this volume would be instructive.
