While decrease in sensory stimuli produces mental phenomena, the authors suggest that the element of meaningfulness of the stimuli is more significant. Ten subjects in a deprivation situation were exposed to random lights and Rorschach cards. Characteristic mental phenomena occurred without significant deviation from comparable experiments without visual stimulation. Thus it appears that it is not the quantity or change in sensation which is requisite for normal function, but 'continuous meaningful contact with the outside world'.
