Along the lines with which he has acquainted us in the past few years, Szasz extends the question of lay analysis to that of lay psychotherapy, particularly in rebuttal to the official views of the American Psychiatric Association. Reviewing the problem, he makes many telling points. For instance, in considering the problem of medical supervision, he points out that patients are responsible for their own health-care; that medical psychotherapists, by and large, refrain from any medical procedures; that it would make as much sense to have the medical psychotherapist responsible to an internist for the so-called over-all care of the patient as it does to conceive of the nonmedical psychotherapist being responsible to the medical psychotherapist.
