Winnicott, in his discussion, revives the original definitions of transference and countertransference and re-emphasizes the transference neurosis as central in psychoanalysis. The analyst's professional attitude enables the patient to see and examine the transference neurosis. Professional attitude is similar to Heimann's concept of sustained feeling capacity. It is necessary to distinguish the role of the analyst in the psychoneuroses from that in antisocial cases and those requiring a total regression. If these distinctions are clear, countertransference reverts to its original meaning of those factors interfering with the professional attitude in psychoanalysis. This frees us to consider the many other things which happen in therapies which are not psychoanalysis.
