This paper is one of a series of observations on schizophrenics by the author and co-workers. Here Freeman remarks on disorders of the perceptual process as distinct from ego and libidinal regressions. The hypotheses of Freud, Schilder, Federn, and others are reviewed and correlated with data from experimental studies by Hebb, Pötzl, Fisher, and Klein. Freeman's clinical data, in his view,
supports the idea that factors other than regressive ones, notably perceptual malfunctions, are present in schizophrenics. They differ in degree and kind with various diagnostic types and their further study may add insight into the schizophrenic process and its origin.
