An autobiographical episode is described to illustrate in detail the ego functions involved in the re-establishment of analytic insight which had temporarily disappeared as the result of emotional stress. The regression was due to a fantasied Oedipal struggle with a father imago. Through introspection the origin of the guilt which led to the regression was discovered and with this insight the anxiety and projected hostility disappeared. The original process of insight in analysis occurs in stages over a period of time, whereas the restoration of insight described here, which follows a similar course, was almost immediate. The insight was partial but sufficient. Partial insight may act as a defense against deeper layers of the infantile unconscious. The restoration process served both adaptive and defensive ends.
