In an experiment designed to determine the differences between posthypnotic immediate dreams and posthypnotic night dreams, it was assumed that the major determinant of the dream would be the artificial conflict suggested under hypnosis. The experimenters were surprised to find the hypnotic situation a powerful determinant. The hypnotic situation prominently represented in the dream included the transference-countertransference aspects as well as the superficial environmental details which had been subliminally perceived by the subject. The data are especially significant since the subjects were research volunteers and not under treatment. This study has considerable value in revealing some of the pitfalls that might be anticipated when one attempts to introduce research parameters into the psychoanalytic situation. It would be advisable to follow the authors' lead and first examine such parameters in a 'purely' experimental situation before risking major contamination of the psychoanalytic process.
