In the development of secondary narcissistic libido and destrudo, and object libido and destrudo from primary narcissistic libido, either secondary form may, under certain conditions, change partly into the other. Ordinarily only secondary narcissistic libido cathects the psychic structures. But under pathological conditions object instinctual energies are discharged in intrapsychic functions; or the secondary narcissistic libido and destrudo are used in object relations, as in the object cathexis that occurs in the mechanism of projection.
