The parents of hospitalized male schizophrenic patients with relatively good premorbid adjustment and of hospitalized tubercular patients were given hypothetical child-rearing problems to solve; parents were tested singly and together until agreement between them was reached. Plausible measures of dominance by one parent over the other, and of conflict between them, revealed that paternal dominance and minimal conflict were associated with schizophrenic patients of good premorbid adjustment; maternal dominance and much conflict were associated with schizophrenic patients of poor premorbid adjustment; the parents of the tubercular patients showed no consistent pattern of dominance and insignificant evidence of conflict.
