One explanatory model for the phenomena of 'perceptual defense', 'perception without awareness', etc., posits two distinct perceptual processes: a conscious supraliminal one and a not-conscious subliminal one. Another model posits a single perceptual process and maintains that 'perception without awareness' is a misnomer because total unawareness of the stimulus has not been adequately determined. The results of three experiments, each paradigmatic of the type usually used to demonstrate subliminal perception, were consistent with the hypothesis of perception of supraliminal partial cues. Before accepting the existence of subliminal perception it would seem necessary to demonstrate that supraliminal cues are not influential.
