The predominant research design in the mental health field is still one which uses the simple medical model: add something to the ego or take away something pathogenic (dammed-up hostilities). Present research should investigate that 'realignment of a whole system of forces in such fashion as to reduce vulnerability'. Not only disease process, but also broad programs of study in the many positive human potentialities are necessary. Suggestions are that studies involve: 1, sharply focused psychiatric work with young children; 2, the use of methods of remedial and preventive psychiatric services which reflect alternate hypotheses about prevention; 3, what makes people ready to accept help; 4, development of appropriate research models and systems of hypotheses; and 5, investigation of the modes of biosocial organization utilized by individuals.
