In this brief but informative paper Hartmann describes the psychoanalytic contribution to the concept of mental health. He indicates the complex interweaving of the metapsychological points of view as an example of the 'multiple criterion approach' to mental health. Of particular interest is his discussion of the relationship between ego strength, neutralization, and autonomous ego function.
