This anthology of studies of the dream includes none of the papers of Freud and other pioneer writers because they are so 'easily accessible'—a decided defect in the book. All the papers in the volume have been abridged. They are arranged by topic. The introductory chapter includes the only previously unpublished paper, a survey by DeMartino himself. McCurdy writes on The History
of Dream Theory, Murphy on The Dreamer, and Weiss on Oneirocritica Americana, a humorous discussion of dream books from colonial times to the present. Chapter two contains observational data, much of it statistical, on the subjects of dreams or the different contents of dreams of men and women. Many of the conclusions reached are elementary and general. The other studies of experimental, theoretical, methodological, and physiological problems of the dream cover many aspects of the subject but leave much to be desired. No psychoanalytic papers are presented, although Harris's work on anxiety dreams, Saul's studies on dream quantification, and the work of Farber and Fisher and of Brenman on hypnosis are included.
The volume has a subject and author index but no bibliography. Its value to the student of psychoanalysis is limited. A brief annotated abstract of each paper might have been more useful.
