Thirty-minute tapes from four schizophrenic patients were analyzed. It was found that each sample had twelve to sixteen instances of expressions for relationships in topological space. The authors believe that this represents a reassertion, at a time of emotional stress, of a basic unsolved problem involving the relationship of self and body to each other and to other objects in space. This problem appears to be projected into the thinking of the adult patient, as observed in his speech, and in the form in which it first developed during the earliest stages of conceptual maturation.
