A number of cases are described to illustrate the importance of analyzing the total masturbation process, including the basic masturbation fantasy and masturbatory manipulative techniques which are being lived out in the patient's character structure. The analysis of the total process may disrupt more efficiently the patient's excessive energic attachment to the self-representation as well as to his early object representations, thereby promoting the cathexis of real objects.
