The author draws on material from ethology, infant observation, and primate experiments as well as from psychosomatic and psychoanalytic papers to construct
his classification of affects. Anxiety and depression-withdrawal cited as two primary affects of unpleasure, are then examined with respect to their ego, self-object, and drive aspects. The attitude of 'fight or flight' is seen as characterizing the affect of anxiety, while 'giving up' characterizes depression-withdrawal. The paper concludes with some brief clinical implications derived from the metapsychological considerations presented.
