This is a brief but profound expression of the relationship of psychoanalysis and literature. Goodman maintains that the meaning of literary works is best explored by literary criticisms and not by psychoanalysis except to explain something that the writer is avoiding. He values as literature the truly freudian case histories but not the existential ones which impose a theory onto the plot. However, he does not appear to be familiar with the final evolvement of the technique of free association.
