Nosology in psychoanalysis is developing from a system of disease entities to an operational classification of pathological forms of behavior. Since neurosis has come to be seen as but quantitatively different from normality, the need for differentiation has apparently been reduced; but the ability to classify becomes dependent upon the ability to measure the quantity of underlying fores. We have need for a nosology all-embracing as to phenomenology, etiology, and of course as to a goal that has some practical value. This is harmless if we remind ourselves that giving a name does not make a thing more real, that a cause is one among many, that a disease need not be fate, and that a doctor's role is to cure rather than be fatalistic.
